• Food is Free in Your Front Yard

Have you thought about starting a Food is Free Project on your block? For a moment, pause, and imagine what it would be like if you and your neighbors came together and started growing food together. What might that look like? What if every time you drove down your block, you passed an array of community gardens and neighbors knew each other? Look out your window and imagine a garden there.

It starts with a vision, but the action is really simple. Plant a garden in your front yard. Maybe you rent your house? So do we! Just go for it. We assure you, it’s worth it. While you’re out with your hands in the soil, conversations will follow. Neighbors will ask what your planting while passing by. That’s how it starts and we’re here to help you out.

Here in Austin, we’re working to document and share our successes and mistakes as we’ve come together to line our block in front yard community gardens. It started with 1 garden in our front yard, which has now expanded to 19/30 houses on our street hosting a Food is Free wicking bed garden. We’ve also started a community composting program to generate soil for our block, and have an outdoor kitchen and tool sharing workshop on the way. Start the conversation in your community and stay in touch if you have questions that we can walk you through.

Remember, start simple and small and the rest will happen organically. The most important part is to take the first step! Put out a call on social media for like-minded individuals in your town. Meet up over a potluck or while planting a garden together. Whatever you do, make sure to document it and share it with your friends, because the ripple keeps moving and inspiring far beyond our own сплит-система в минске horizon
